Nursery pet hamster, Police Visit & The Moon

Nursery pet hamster

Our little Owls here at Scarning, regularly look after and care for our nursery pet hamster Barney. This includes feeding her, changing her bedding, filling her water bottle up and holding her. Our hamster is a fantastic way for our children to learn about looking after others and taking on responsibilities. Caring for animals can promote empathy as children need to understand and recognise animals needs.

Police Visit

Today at Toftwood nursery we were lucky enough to have a visit from the police! Roger the police man and his friend taught us all about how we can stay safe and what to do if a stranger talks to us! We learnt how to ‘run yell tell’ if a stranger talks to us! The children also got to try on lots of different bits of uniform!

When we spoke about this in the afternoon the children said ‘We run from strangers’
‘Strangers are people we don’t know’

The Moon

This week in Barn Owls Toftwood we have been busy learning all about the moon! Some of our children have shown a real interest in the moon over the last few weeks now it’s getting darker earlier! And they love hunting for the moon in the sky! So we have adapted our planning to incorporate this.

The children have been joining in with lots of moon themed activities including helping to decorate moons and planets for our space themed display board, watching a clip of the moon landing and exploring our new sensory moon!

Some of the things our Barn Owls have learnt are..

‘Astronauts go there, it takes a long time’
‘It’s up in the sky’
‘There’s lots of planets near the moon’
