What is a Story Cafe?

A story cafe is an effective way for Early Years settings to work in partnership with children’s parents and families. They enable children to benefit from the closer relationships linked between home and nursery and help parents to feel more confident in supporting their children’s learning and love of books.

What is a Cafe Session?

The cafe is run by one of the Little Owls staff members and lasts for approximately an hour. The main focus of the cafe is the sharing of a selected book, which is familiar to the children, and can be shared with the children and their families. Following on from the story the children and parents will be able to join in with a pre-prepared craft activity which is associated with the selected story. We will then finish the session with a snack and refreshments for the children and their parents. The session is designed to be relaxed and informal whilst involving our children, parents and staff in a fun and enjoyable experience.

Do parents have to read?

No, a Little Owls staff member will read the story to the children and parents will be encouraged to sit with their children whilst listening to the story.

What do you need to bring?

Just yourself. We will provide the fun and refreshments.

Can I bring somebody with me?

Unfortunately not. Due to the limited space on offer we will need to work on a strict rota basis with parents. However, if you have a baby you need to bring with you, please let us know so we are able to provide you with a treasure basket.

What happens with the Craft Activity?

This will already be prepared and set up by the nursery and you are free to either participate with your children or support them.

Do I need to bring refreshments?

No, the nursery will supply snacks and drinks for the children and parents. However, please advise us if you have any dietary requirements.

How long will I need to stay?

The session will last for approximately 60 minutes and after this you are able to leave your child at nursery for the remainder of their normal nursery session.

How do I book a place to attend?

If your child attends nursery on the day and times of the Cafe you need to fill in your name if you would like to attend the Cafe. We will then confirm with you if you have been allocated a space. Due to the space restrictions, we will initially only have spaces for 12 parents. We will however, continue to roll out the Story cafes over the next few months so that every parent will have the opportunity to attend.
