Science Week & Windy Weather

Science week

Today in Barn owl red, we have been experimenting with colour!
Following the children’s current interests in nature and colour mixing, we have carried out our own experiments changing the colours of flowers. We started with some white flowers and mixed together some different coloured colouring and water in some cups. We put one flower in each cup and left it over night to see what would happen… and when we had a look this morning some of the flowers had began to change colour!
Barn Owls noticed that when they picked the flower up, the colour has gone all the way ‘up the long bit!’ which we then discovered is called the stalk. They also said,
‘the petals are turning blue’
‘this one is still white’
And ‘we need to wait longer’

We then began experimenting with the pipets and the other flowers, seeing what would happen when we put the colouring straight onto the petals. Each Barn owl, chose a flower and a different colour to try and noticed that ‘the yellow bit is changing ‘ when they put the colour on the flower.
Once they had finished, Barn Owls out their flower into the correct coloured cup to see it their flower would change even more through the day.

Skittles Science Experiment

This week we are celebrating science week at nursery and the Barn Owl children at toftwood have this morning been joining in with a very exciting science experiment! Today we created our own rainbow!!

We started off by talking about rainbows at grouptime, we spoke about what colours we see in a rainbow, when we see rainbows in the sky ‘when there’s sun and rain together’ and we read a story called the greedy rainbow.

We then sat down in a circle to create our own rainbow! We added skittles and water together on a plate and watched as the colours ran to form a rainbow in the middle of the plate!

Well done Barn Owls, get investigating!

Exploring the windy weather

Today during outdoor play the barn owls showed curiosity in the windy weather.
Laura suggested that we make some kites to fly in the wind. The children helped Laura to cut pieces of string which we attached to a bag. The children were very impressed with their kites, running round the garden trying to get the gusts of wind to make their kites go high in the air. Some of the children showed good imaginative skills and a strong thought process- asking for longer pieces of string so they flew up higher and also standing on the climbing frame at a higher level to be closer to the sky!
The wind was strong at times and a couple of the kites broke. ” the wind was too strong, my kite ripped”
The children giggled delightfully throughout this activity.
When we came inside we extended our activity\learning further by decorating our own kites using card, ribbon and coloured pens.
At group time before lunch we sat together to read ” a flying visit ” (Percy and the park keeper), looking at the hedgehog who wanted to be able to fly. This took us on to a big discussion of all animals\objects that can fly!
Who would of thought that a whole morning at nursery could be themed and continuously extended to promote further learning and opportunities from a comment on the weather!
“I have this book at home”
“Hedgehogs can’t fly”
“But aeroplanes can”
“Ducks can fly”
“I had my big muscles to hold onto my kite”
“It was so windy”
“My kite flyed really high”
“That was so much fun”
“Look at mine Laura”
“Can I help you cut”
