Spring, Building a fire engine & World book day

Spring

This week in Snowy Owls Scarning our topic is Spring and we are focusing on The Holi Festival of colour!
Today to explore colours within the natural world around us we took the children around the nursery and outdoor spaces to explore the different plants, and their colours! We took parts of the coloured items we found and matched them to a colour chart! The children demonstrated excellent colour recognition and matching too!
“That’s red” “yellow, that is yellow isn’t it” “that one goes on there, can you help me please” “look” “I like this”

Building a fire engine

This week in Barn Owls Scarning, following on from one of our children’s interest in being a fire fighter when they are older, and the children’s love of construction, with some help from their familiar adult, the children built their own fire engine out of our loose parts in the garden, they used the crates, ladder, hose and steering wheel. This activity really enhanced the children’s imagination skills with them role playing being fire fighters, they also added fire bikes to their play, as well as finding containers of water to throw at the house to put out the fires. The children also enjoyed taking it in turns to drive the fire engine and climbing up the ladder. This activity also encouraged some fantastic communication between the children with them saying:
“Fire fire”
“We need some more water”
“Where is the fire?”
“At the house”
“You be the driver, I will be the fireman”.
Well done Barn owls!

World Book Day

Yesterday our Barn Owls at toftwood had a wonderful day celebrating world book day!! We saw some wonderful costumes and the children thoroughly enjoyed engaging in lots of activities themed around our favourite stories! These included a ‘the tiger who came to tea’ builders tray, creating our own supertatos and retelling our own version of the gruffalo!
We finished the day by reading some of the stories our children had brought in from home
