On Friday, both Nursery’s welcomed Sarah from Dentaid The Dental Charity who visited to talk to the children about the importance of brushing their teeth. The children gathered on the carpet and showed great curiosity as Sarah introduced herself and brought out a large model of a mouth and a toothbrush. Many children leaned forward, showing clear interest, and several raised their hands eagerly when she asked questions such as, “Who brushes their teeth at home?”.
Sarah demonstrated how to brush in small circles and explained how brushing twice a day helps keep teeth strong and healthy. The children were encouraged to copy the movements in the air using their fingers or imaginary toothbrushes. Most children joined in enthusiastically, smiling and laughing as they practised the technique. We also had the opportunity to practise on the large mouth, using the toothbrush to clean the large teeth!
During the session, the dentist talked about healthy foods that help teeth and those that can cause cavities. The children responded confidently, naming items like apples, carrots, and sweets. Their engagement showed a developing understanding of how food choices affect dental health.
At the end, the dentist gave each child a sticker and a small brushing bag containing a toothbrush and toothpaste to take home. The children thanked Sarah and continued to talk excitedly about teeth and brushing as they returned to their play.
We continued this topic by cleaning some dirty teeth using some toothpaste and toothpaste at the table.
The visit supported the children’s awareness of self-care and personal hygiene and encouraged positive attitudes toward looking after their teeth.
Thank you Sarah from Dentaid for the wonderful visit to both of our settings!
